Medical abortion with abortion pill

Medical abortion is a simple and safe way to abort that involves taking two medications at two different times.

This method can be used up to 20 weeks into pregnancy at Dr. lisa’s Women’s Clinic

The first drug terminates the pregnancy and is called mifepristone. It works by blocking the hormone progesterone. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus falls off, and the pregnancy cannot continue.

The second drug, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract, causing cramping, bleeding, and expulsion of the pregnancy, similar to a miscarriage.

How Medical Abortion Works

When it comes to performing a medical abortion, the timing of the medications is important, a medical abortion works as follows:

  • You will take the first medication (mifepristone) at the clinic.
  • You will take the second medicine (misoprostol) 1 or 2 days later at home.
  • In the next 1-5 hours the pregnancy will be delivered.

Protocol – Steps of abortion pills

Step 1 – Mifepristone

The first medicine taken during this type of abortion, called mifepristone, blocks the hormone necessary for the pregnancy to progress. You will take a pill of mifepristone with water; this is done in the clinic. It is important to allow 24-48 hours to pass between taking this pill and the second medicine.

Step 2 – Misoprostol

The second drug is called misoprostol and it causes the body to expel the pregnancy from the uterus. Misoprostol causes softening and opening of the cervix (cervix) and contractions of the uterus so that the pregnancy can be expelled through the vagina.

Misoprostol abortion pills are placed in the vagina or between the cheek and gums. The first dose is 4 pills and we will give you 2 more pills to put on 3-4 hours after the first dose.

We recommend taking some pain relief pills 10 minutes before using misoprostol. You can use misoprostol 24 to 48 hours after taking the first abortion pill (mifepristone).
